Developed by Roy F. Harrold and Evsey Domar in the late 1940s, the Harrod-Domar model follows a Keynesian framework that emphasizes factors believed responsible for economic growth (among them, the capital stock, investment, the marginal propensity to save and so forth).

En effet, l'égalité nécessaire entre les taux de croissance effectif (G), garanti (GW, nécessaire pour que l'équilibre macro-économique entre l'épargne et l'investissement) et naturel (Gn, somme de la productivité du travail, m, et du taux de croissance de la population, n) ne peut se faire que sur le «fil du rasoir». Le modèle de Harrod et Domar tend ainsi à mettre en évidence l'instabilité de la croissance.
